BUILDING COMMUNITY AND REACHING OUT

Metal Paper Cranes is an initiative to show solidarity with communities struggling with the effects of racism and intolerance. It was born out of a Japanese legend that says if one folds 1000 origami paper cranes they will be granted one wish. Our shared wish in this project is to create a more tolerant society for all. To this end we are endeavoring to create sets of 1000 paper cranes for communities across Greater Vancouver, British Columbia, and Canada. To make this project truly special each set of paper cranes will be accompanied by two everlasting origami cranes made in silver and copper.

The struggle for a fair society is well known today as we live within the movements of Black Lives Matter, Every Child Matters, and Stop Asian Hate. It can be overwhelming but you are not alone with these feelings. Metal Paper Cranes asks you to join members of the community and lend your time towards a shared goal.

Metal Paper Cranes has been made possible through the support of:

The National Association of Japanese Canadians

Neighbourhood Small Grants - East Vancouver.

STRANDS OF 50 CRANES

Details of the Crane Sets

Every set of cranes is composed of 1000 paper cranes, one copper crane, and one silver cranes in a display case.

The paper cranes and folded by hand are strung together on sewing string. Each crane on a string is folded from the same size origami paper. The ideal cranes for this project are folded from 3" (75mm) origami paper. The reason we prefer smaller cranes is because 1000 cranes takes up a lot of space! 6" (150mm) paper is the standard size and this represents four times the paper per crane when compared to 3" paper.

Each set of cranes held in place at the end of a strand by a bead that is the first item to be sewn onto the thread. Full instructions for threading the cranes can be found in the images below!

3" Paper Origami Cranes: 50 per strand.

6" Paper Origami Cranes: 25 per strand.
